An Absolute Beginner's Guide to Music Theory In-Person

In this event series, Annie and Rachel will take you on a journey,—starting from the very beginning of reading music—to give you the skills to start reading sheet music on your own.

February 3rd: For this first class of the series, we will teach you the musical alphabet, rhythms, and important music related vocabulary. Working together, we will help you get to know the differences between note values and tempos with the use of percussion instruments. Additionally, simple sheet music will be provided that you can keep to practice on your own!

March 3rd: For the second class in this series, we will expand upon the knowledge gained in our first session, looking at note differences between clefs, working on harder rhythms, and giving you more tools to succeed on your own time!

Annie began playing the piano at age 5 and the violin at age 8. She continued studying classical violin throughout high school and college. Today she enjoys playing chamber music with Telluride Chamber, working with her violin and piano students, and performing at wedding ceremonies throughout Southwest Colorado. She also enjoys learning new instruments- right now she is learning how to play the cello, and she is a new member of the Telluride Chorale.

Rachel learned to read music at four years old during piano lessons and played the violin for eight years from elementary through high school. Although she doesn't play instruments much anymore, Rachel has sung in auditioned choirs from Middle School through University, reading music through singing. She now sings with the Telluride Choral Society's Chamber Choir and Chorale, as well as a small community renaissance ensemble. She also recently sang with the San Juan Choral Festival in Summer of 2025.
